Berlin camp is a relatively short climb from Nido - approximately 3 hours. At over 19,000 feet though, just existing is an effort for all but the best acclimatized hikers. It is cold and windy. There is a small hut with a very low and tiny door that is "first come first served". It is convenient as a cooking hut, but hikers are better off in a tent for sleeping, which is likely to be warmer. The hut is an important refuge in case of truly severe weather where tents may be in danger of collapse.
At the end of February in 2006, crampons were necessary above this point. It is more common that they are required only above Independencia hut.
The extreme weather at Berlin unfortunately leaves the camp in a disagreeable state. Human waste is everywhere. It is understandable that in dangerous situations, care in sanitation is disregarded, and people have to relieve themselves just outside their tents in a storm. However, that does not make the aftermath any more pleasant.
A post at Summitpost.org advises: "... there is no sign of litter or human waste at Calero (sp?), though it is more exposed to wind. Calero is perhaps 200ft higher than Berlin. Upon reaching Berlin, take an immediate left, follow the trail towards the black rocks on the ridge."
It is important to rest as much as possible here, since the next day will typically be summit day.
