Up-Valley Leaders Endorse SRA Campaign for Angwin

Thirteen prominent Up-Valley leaders have joined the Save Rural Angwin campaign against inappropriate subdivision development in Angwin.. They will comprise an Advisory Council, to lend their experience and prestige to the effort.

Only two are Angwin residents. The rest are civic and business leaders who bring an even broader outlook to the campaign.

"The major goal of Save Rural Angwin is to protect agricultural lands here from urbanization," said SRA Spokesman Allen Spence. "That is a mission that numerous civic and business leaders throughout Napa County have pursued for years. It is only natural that they would not turn their back on that mission here in Angwin."

The Advisory Council includes Dr. Meade Baldwin, Carl Benson, Jon-Mark Chappellet, Hugh Davies, Guy Kay, Robin Lail, Dick Maher, Mary Novak, Dario Sattui, John Shafer, Mel Varrelman, and Warren and Barbara Winiarski.

Most of the Advisory Council are prominent agriculturalists. They are appalled at the proposals to convert prime agricultural land on Howell Mountain into houses. Warren and Barbara Winiarski's concerns are typical. The Winiarskis lived in Angwin from 1965 to 1970 when their children attended the Howell Mountain Elementary School.

"When we lived there," said Warren, "we loved Angwin for what it was and not for what it might become through development. The idea of allowing the development of Angwin through the conversion of the agricultural and watershed lands conflicts with everything that has been accomplished during the past 40 years to support the primacy of agriculture and open space in Napa County."

Save Rural Angwin was endorsed by the Napa County Farm Bureau and the Napa County Sierra Club several months ago., expanding the local campaign into a countywide issue.
